Why Does a PC Slow Down Over Time?
A Windows PC that once felt snappy can gradually become sluggish through normal use. The causes are usually a combination of accumulated junk files, too many startup programs, a fragmented or nearly full hard drive, outdated drivers, and sometimes background malware activity. The good news: most of these issues are fixable without spending money on new hardware.
Step 1: Check What's Using Your Resources
Before making any changes, identify where the slowdown is coming from. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and click the "Processes" tab. Sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk to see which programs are consuming the most resources. If an unfamiliar process is using unusually high resources, investigate it — it could indicate malware.
Step 2: Disable Unnecessary Startup Programs
Every program that launches at startup adds to your boot time and consumes background memory. To manage startup items:
- Open Task Manager and click the Startup tab
- Review the list — look at the "Startup impact" column
- Right-click any program you don't need immediately at boot and select Disable
Common culprits include cloud sync apps, chat clients, media players, and manufacturer utilities. Disabling doesn't uninstall them — they'll still work when you open them manually.

Windows uses animations and visual effects that look polished but consume processing power. To reduce them:
- Search for "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" in the Start menu
- Select "Adjust for best performance" or manually uncheck specific effects
- Click Apply
This is especially effective on older PCs with limited RAM or a basic integrated GPU.
Step 5: Check Your Storage Drive Health and Space
If your system drive (especially an older HDD) is more than 85% full, performance suffers noticeably. Free up space by uninstalling programs you no longer use (Settings > Apps) and moving large files like videos or photos to an external drive or cloud storage.
If you're still using a traditional hard disk drive (HDD), upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) is the single most impactful hardware upgrade you can make — it dramatically reduces boot times and application load speeds.
Step 6: Keep Windows and Drivers Updated
Outdated drivers — especially for graphics cards, storage controllers, and network adapters — can cause performance bottlenecks and stability issues. Check:
- Windows Update (Settings > Windows Update) for OS patches and driver updates
- Your PC or motherboard manufacturer's website for the latest chipset and graphics drivers
Step 7: Scan for Malware
Background malware — including cryptocurrency miners and spyware — can silently consume CPU, memory, and bandwidth. Run a full system scan with your antivirus software and consider a secondary scan with an on-demand anti-malware tool to catch anything your primary tool might miss.
Step 8: Manage Power Settings
Windows laptops especially can throttle performance when set to a battery-saving power plan. Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings and select Balanced or High performance when plugged in.
